Monster tamer game from 1998

Pocketman Third D is a role-playing game originally released in 1998. It was made for the ill-fated Powerbox 620, a fifth-generation console, sold for seven hours before being pulled from shelves due to high levels of radiation. Bynine Studio painstakingly ported it so the new generation of players can enjoy the game. The game works like the original monster tamer game that the 90s crowd loved. You collect monsters that you need to tame and use them for battles.

Old-school monster tamer

Monster tamer games are always a niche genre, even if its heydey. And when it comes to this life sims, the three titles that fought for the position are Pokemon, Monster Rancher, and Digimon. These games defined the genre, with its gameplay complexity ahead of its time. However, even these games have lesser titles every year. Some of the ones released aren’t monster taming as the main focus while some are too mediocre for their good.

Pocketman is a classic monster taming game brought to your computers in stereoscopic 3D. In the game, you play as a new pocketman master, who needs to collect pocketmen scattered around the game map. You will then need to tame and train them, so you can use them in a pocketment battle. You can challenge other pocketman masters in intense 3-on-3 combat to prove your mettle.

Pocketman Third D uses triple-core blast processing to bring you the game in 3D graphics. It has a great creature design and a brand new map. The gameplay of the original game remains intact, so you don’t need to learn how to play it.

A great follow-up

Overall, Pocketman Third D is a great follow-up on the original version. It employs the same gameplay but presented it in a new and more colorful design. On top of that, the developer left a few collections of secrets that you will also need to find. It could use a few improvements since there are still a few glitches. However, it is already a good homage to the classic game.

PROS

  • Faithful to the gameplay of the original game
  • Colorful 3D design
  • Classic monster taming game
  • Uses triple-core blast processing

CONS
